David Angold 1935 – 2022

David Angold, familiar to so many not just in the UK but around the world, passed away peacefully on Saturday 26 November with his wife of 67 years, Angela, by his side.

In the early 1960s, David and Angela started Pinnerwood Stud. They enjoyed many years of successful showing and breeding with British National Champions such as the Anglos Blue Madrigal (Blue Ludo x Fair Legend) and Fair Legend (Articulate x Marina Fair), as well as El Helaly (Ikhnatoon x Enshad) in the show-ring. They also enjoyed success on the racetrack with Kactus (Mikeno x Gayroxana), a grade one racehorse. In 1978, they imported the Spanish stallion Procyon (Saludo x Casiopea) from his breeder Don Luis de Ybarra on behalf of a client. Procyon became the leading sire of winners, both in the show-ring and on the racecourse for many years.

David’s involvement with Arabian horses took him all over the world, accompanying Angela on her International judging appointments or as a Disciplinary Committee member himself. He joined WAHO as a member in 1976, attending nearly all the WAHO Conferences from that date. Elected to the Council of the Arab Horse Society in the 1980s, he was Chairman of their racing committee, involved with racing from its current beginnings in England as an amateur sport to its current professional status. In 1996, David served as President of the Arab Horse Society and was also a Governor. In 1989, David joined the ‘ad hoc’ committee that started the UK International Arabian Horse Show (UKIAHS), the only A show in the UK, and he remained closely involved with this title show for many years.

David became a WAHO Executive Committee member in 2001 and was Treasurer from 2002 to 2019. Every year, he presented the annual WAHO Trophy at the British National Championships.

David touched many lives around the world, always there with a smile and a joke, and all who knew him will truly miss him. Our thoughts are with his wife, Angela, and their family at this sad time.
