After 134 years, the Bosnian Arabian horse has been officially recognised in Bosnia and Herzegovina
After 134 years of continuous breeding, dedicated preservation efforts, and the unwavering commitment of breeders determined to protect a unique part of their country’s heritage, the Bosnian Arabian Horse has been officially recognised as a distinct breed in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This historic milestone represents one of the most significant achievements in the modern history of equine breeding in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It marks the successful preservation of a valuable genetic, cultural, and historical legacy that has been developed on Bosnian soil for more than a century.

Behind this achievement stands the Association of Breeders and Enthusiasts of the Bosnian Arabian Horse (UUBAK), which has spent years collecting historical documentation, conducting scientific research, performing DNA analyses according to internationally recognized standards, establishing international partnerships, and promoting the Bosnian Arabian Horse both nationally and abroad.
A central figure in this remarkable story is Adnan Delić, whose vision, determination, and long-term dedication became the driving force behind the preservation and recognition of the breed. At a time when the continuity and identity of the Bosnian Arabian Horse faced serious challenges, he assumed the responsibility of safeguarding an important part of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s equestrian heritage for future generations.

Standing alongside him throughout this journey was Dr. Nermina Spahija, DVM, PhD, veterinarian and researcher, whose scientific expertise, professional knowledge, and personal commitment played a crucial role in the recognition process. Together with their team of collaborators, they led an initiative that will remain permanently recorded as a landmark achievement in the country’s equine history.
This success was not achieved overnight. For years, historical pedigrees dating back more than a century were collected and analyzed, bloodlines were studied, archival records were researched, and collaborations were established with leading experts and organizations in the field of Arabian horse breeding. Cooperation with international institutions, including the World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO), as well as numerous experts from Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad, contributed significantly to the successful completion of this process.

The Bosnian Arabian Horse is more than a horse breed. It is a living part of the cultural identity, tradition, and history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Developed through generations of selective breeding, it has been shaped by the country’s environment, people, and equestrian traditions. Its endurance, intelligence, noble character, and adaptability have made it a unique representative of Bosnian horse breeding.
The official recognition of the Bosnian Arabian Horse represents a victory of knowledge, perseverance, scientific work, and a shared belief that valuable heritage deserves to be preserved. This achievement belongs not only to a single association or a dedicated team, but to all those who believed that the Bosnian Arabian Horse deserved recognition in the land where it was created and developed.
History will remember that this generation accomplished what many believed impossible: preserving the Bosnian Arabian Horse from disappearance and restoring its rightful place among the recognised horse breeds of the world.
