JORDAN AT A GLANCE
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, a place that once captivated ancient travellers, continues to enthral a new generation with its eclectic mix of modernity and tradition. Jordan is a land steeped in history. As the crossroads of the Middle East, our country has served as a strategic nexus, connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe. Since the dawn of civilisation, Jordan’s location and geography has given it an important role as a conduit for trade and communications; connecting the orient with the west.

From the enchanting red sands of Wadi Rum to the restless city centre of urban Amman, from the famous ruins of civilisations once forgotten to its less well-known natural environments, Jordan is a unique destination that attracts visitors young and old to experience its countless wonders. We invite you to come and share them with us at the WAHO Jordan 2022 Conference.

As a tourist destination, Jordan is famously both diverse and welcoming. We have arranged a variety of special, tailor-made tours to make your stay in Jordan as enjoyable as possible. We hope this wide range of options will enable you to see as much of our country as possible.

PRE-CONFERENCE TOURS

Tour D1/D2: True Treasures Al Ma’wa for Nature and Wildlife and Jerash full day
Al Ma’wa for Nature and Wildlife, through a partnership between the Princess Alia Foundation and Four Paws in 2011, was established to provide a regional solution for rescued wildlife and animals confiscated from the illegal trade in wild animals. In a space of 110 hectares, species-specific enclosures ensure the animals have enough space and appropriate conditions that best suit their natural needs. Here you will see our rescued tigers, lions, bears, hyenas, wolves and monkeys, and hear their stories of rescue and rehabilitation.

Jerash is justly famous as one of the largest and best preserved archaeological sites of Roman architecture in the world outside Italy. Once one of the ten biggest cities of the Roman empire, and hidden under the sands for centuries, it is also known as the city of 1,000 pillars and is a close second to Petra as a ‘must-see’ site in Jordan. It has an unbroken chain of human occupation dating back more than 6,500 years.

Tour E1/E2: Ancient Amman and Jordan Museum
The guided tour includes stopping points to see Amman Citadel, Umayyad Palace, Byzantine Church, Hercules Temple, the Archaeological Museum, and the Roman Amphitheatre.

Ancient Amman: The vast Roman Amphitheatre is approached along a column-lined walkway. Nearby is the Odeon, a smaller restored Roman theatre. Overlooking both is the Citadel, dating as far back as the Bronze Age, built on top of one of Jebel Al Qala’a, Amman’s seven hills, giving a wonderful view of Amman as well as of the Citadel’s ruins – both Roman and Islamic – that provide a link to the city’s past.

The Jordan Museum: Designed to present the history and cultural heritage of Jordan, the Museum entices visitors to explore the Kingdom’s past, present and future. The permanent galleries and exhibition space cover 1.5 million years of Jordanian history and archaeology, starting from the Paleolithic, linking to the present, and projecting into the future.

Tour F: Mosaics of Madaba and Mount Nebo
Madaba, a friendly market town with a long tradition of religious tolerance, is deservedly renowned for its unique collection of early mosaics at various locations, including the Greek Orthodox church of St George. This 19th century Christian church houses a treasure of early Christianity. The open air museum at the Archaeological Park houses a collection of ruins and some very fine mosaics from the area.

The sacred mountain of Mount Nebo stands almost 1,000 metres high, with spectacular views from the top including of the Valley of the River Jordan, the Dead Sea, and the Brazen Serpent sculpture. Of great religious significance, Mount Nebo is believed to be the place where Moses stood to view the sacred Promised Land. In the 4th century, a small church was built here by Egyptian monks and a century later, reconstructed into a basilica. This ancient, peaceful place houses some of the best preserved and most beautiful mosaics in Jordan.

Tour G: A Day at the Dead Sea
The Dead Sea is so named because, apart from some microorganisms and algae, this saltwater lake is totally devoid of life. The spectacular landscape is without a doubt one of the world’s most amazing places, being the lowest point on earth, over 400m below sea level. For some 2000 years, it has attracted travellers to what amounts to a natural, outdoor, free health spa. The leading attraction is the warm, soothing, water itself – ten times saltier than normal sea water, and rich in chloride salts such as magnesium, sodium, potassium, and bromine. The naturally buoyant water is a great way to relax without exerting any effort.
